Northern Lights invited us to create a new participatory installation for the 2011 Minnesota State Fair as part of the offering of free events open to the public, and a re-think of technology within the communal experience in the fair.
In the tradition of the great Minnesota get-together, visitors to the 2011 State Fair were invited to celebrate the magic of singing together in the first ever Giant Sing Along. Minneapolis and St. Paul locals responded to an open online request to set up the best summer song list ever via the State Fair homepage.
On site, a field of microphones welcomed everyone to sing their lungs out to the year’s voted hits, karaoke style, with friends, family, the church choir, total strangers. A giant LED screen featured lyrics of pop songs, old and very old songs, chorals, country music... songs that no one can resist. Software magic helped everyone sing in unison.
